Web Users “Ruthless” About Getting What They Want

May 27, 2008By Michael Stoner

Dr. Nielsen said,

Web users have always been ruthless and now are even more so ….”
“People want sites to get to the point, they have very little patience,” he said.
“I do not think sites appreciate that yet,” he added. “They still feel that their site is interesting and special and people will be happy about what they are throwing at them.”

According to Nielsen’s research, about 25 percent of people visit a home page and then link deeper into a site. The rest-75 percent-get what they want by searching and linking directly to what they want. Search engines, Nielsen says, rule the web.

This means that search engine optimization and internal search are more important than ever, of course. It also means that optimizing your site for “shopping” is very important. Once they’ve found something on your site, some visitors will want to learn more. Make sure that they can get around your site easily by pointing and clicking, as well as by search.
