Our site needs to be easier to use.”

I just want to be able to get to the things that are most important to me.”

It’s so hard to find anything on our site, and I’ve worked here for 15 years. I can’t imagine how someone who is just looking at it for the first time would find anything.”

Sound familiar?

These statements highlight just some of the common problems related to a website’s information architecture (IA). The way you organize, label, sequence, and group elements on your site — from the smallest files and paragraphs to pages and entire microsites — is managed through information architecture. The better your site’s IA, the easier it is for visitors to find information and engage with your institution.

Let mStoner help with our upcoming three-part series on information architecture.

Information Architecture: Definition and Core Elements
Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. EDT / 1 p.m. CDT

In this session, you’ll learn about IA’s evolution as a discipline, what skills and work constitute IA (and what doesn’t), the core organizational schema and structures that are used, and how to infuse IA into your work on campus.

Information Architecture: User Experience, Behavior, and Testing
Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. EDT / 1 p.m. CDT

In this session, you’ll learn how IA acts as a cornerstone for user experience, how user browsing behavior shapes the ways we build navigation structures, and how user testing and feedback help ground your IA in real data.

Information Architecture: The Architect’s Tools & Blueprints
Thursday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. EDT / 1 p.m. CDT

In this session, you’ll watch alongside as the presenter, Fran Zablocki, uses tools such as OmniOutliner, Google Docs, and Gather Content to create sample IA and evolve it to include context for content and design.

*Each session will last about 60 to 75 minutes.
