Penn State Introduces News Alerts Via Text Messaging

Aug 20, 2006By Michael Stoner

Penn State announced last week that it will offer a new service, PSUTXT, that will send text messages about campus emergencies, sports, and concerts to the mobile phones of subscribers. [More info here.] Registration for the service is available on Penn State Live website, which links to podcasts, newswires, and other services.

Though anyone is able to subscribe to PSUTXT, the information will be geared to students, faculty and staff. Annemarie Mountz, assistant director of Public Information for Internet Communications at Penn State, explained: “For now, we decided to start with those three (topics). It will expand, but we are keeping in mind that people’s phone services charge them for text messages. We are going to make sure it’s information they really want.”

Whatever. I'm not much interested in cutting edge but what actually works for real people in the real world. Does that make me a bad person?
