Email Resources

Jul 01, 2004By Michael Stoner

Here are some great resources for email strategy and tactics.

Did you know that some words are commonly used by spammers and, as a result, trigger spam filters to send a message to the trash? Here’s a short list of words you should not use in email.

Michael Gilbert is a well-known consultant for nonprofits. Here is the Gilbert Email Manifesto (GEM). The first line: “Email is more important than my web site!”

Here is a Sample Size Calculator, which will help you determine how small a sample can you use and still get reliable results from an email campaign. Thanks to TargetX (see below) for this resource.

TargetX is a firm that provides email strategy and technology services to education—they are an mStoner partner. The firm publishes a special report, “37 Email Tips Every Marketer Should Read Before Pressing Send,” with a thoughtful set of tips compiled by Brian Niles, president. We also heartily endorse their email newsletter, TargetX’s Email Minute, which arrives on Fridays and is always a great read.

Marketing Sherpa provides a terrific article on email, Top 10 Stupid Email Mistakes for 2004.

Finally, for more than you ever want to know, here is a compliation of the text of all state, federal, and foreign laws on email marketing. Now you can see which ones you’re violating. Just kidding: if you’re reading this blog, we know you’re careful about the email you send!

  • Michael Stoner Co-Founder and Co-Owner Was I born a skeptic or did I become one as I watched the hypestorm gather during the dotcom years, recede, and congeal once more as we come to terms with our online, social, mobile world? Whatever. I'm not much interested in cutting edge but what actually works for real people in the real world. Does that make me a bad person?
