Presidents Communicate About the Economy

Dec 17, 2008By Michael Stoner

Over at Alumni Futures, Andy Shaindlin provides a useful set of links to messages from a large number of (mostly) university presidents who have been communicating with their constituents about the effect of the economic downturn on their campuses.

He links to messages from 15 presidents and also the AAU’s Public Affairs Network’s website and a post from Karine Joly about Wesleyan University president Michael S. Roth’s Securing the Future website.

Like Andy-and millions of othersI hope we’re reading different kinds of messages at the end of 2009. For the time being, our research indicates that while the economy is a harsh reality for many, marketers and communicators are still grappling with other issues. But communicators need to be thinking about how, and what, to say to key audiencesalumni, parents, and friends-about the effect of the recession on your campuses. It’s part of an authentic conversation we need to be having right now. And I think people expect it from the important institutions in their lives. If you haven’t done this yourself, think about it: Andy’s post is a good place to start benchmarking what others have done.

Whatever. I'm not much interested in cutting edge but what actually works for real people in the real world. Does that make me a bad person?
