Software for architecture and content inventories

Jun 16, 2003By Voltaire Santos Miran

A number of clients have asked what we use to manage our content inventories and to generate our sitemaps. For the last year, I’ve used two sister programs, OmniOutliner and OmniGraffle, produced by the The Omni Group.

OmniOutliner is a remarkable tool for organizing information in hierarchical or outline fashion. The program also maintains checklist and multiple-column formats with much more ease and flexibility than either Excel or MS Word. OmniGraffle is great for rendering maps and wireframes. The added bonus: you can drag an OmniOutliner file into OmniGraffle, and the program will automatically render that outline in sitemap or flowchart format. Much faster than Visio or Powerpoint in creating architecture charts.

The one downside to the programs is that they’re Mac-only.
