Front-End Developer

As a front-end developer at mStoner, you’ll be responsible for delivering modern, engaging, and highly usable websites and digital experiences for our college and university clients.

The ideal candidate has three to five years of experience and wants exposure to all aspects of front-end development, seeks professional growth, enjoys helping clients, and approaches their work with care and craft.

Our front-end code forms the bridge between custom designs and large content management system implementations and therefore it is an essential competency for our business. We employ modern techniques and are moving toward headless and decoupled architectures.

We’re looking for someone who can collaborate effectively with designers, strategists, and back-end developers and is comfortable interacting with clients. We’re also looking for someone who will enjoy working in a remote, casual, and collegial team.

What You'll Do

  • Create fully responsive, meticulous HTML5/CSS3 templates using JavaScript/ES6/React that meet cross-browser requirements.
  • Ensure HTML deliverables meet technical quality standards, accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 Level AA) and work with CMS developers to complete a smooth transition to the implementation phase.
  • Work in partnership with designers, user experience experts, and quality assurance analysts to produce clean, performant, forward-thinking, responsive and scalable front-end HTML.
  • Build reusable code and maintain our front-end build processes and repositories.
  • Participate in the generation of UI workflows, wireframes, and/or prototypes with associated UX and information architecture considerations.
  • Integrate SEO best practices throughout work products.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum of three to five years of experience as a front-end developer
  • Prior experience in an agency or consulting firm that services clients is a plus
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with responsive web design, front-end build processes, and HTML5 / CSS3 / SASS / JavaScript / ES6 / React / Preact
  • Demonstrated capability to use task runners and package managers for build automation such as NPM, Gulp, Yarn and Webpack
  • Familiarity with graphic design applications such as Sketch and content management platforms including Drupal and WordPress
  • Solid understanding of best practices and standards for web development, performance, security, accessibility (WCAG 2.1), and organic search engine optimization
  • Proficient with code versioning tools such as Git and Bitbucket
  • Familiar with quality assurance tools and code validation tools

  • Must be able to work in the Central Time Zone
  • Must be willing to travel on occasion to client locations, mStoner Chicago, or meet ups with technical team members in St. Louis (all travel has been indefinitely suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic)

Interactive Designer

mStoner is looking for an interactive designer with exceptional graphic design skills, a passion for typography, and an artistic eye for detail. Our ideal candidate has an interest in motion design and the talent to produce polished prototypes with the latest design tools. You’ll craft stunning, original creative concepts and create modern, responsive design systems for the web.

As an interactive designer, you’ll join an experienced team of strategists, UX designers, and technologists to bring education brands to life through elegant and immersive digital experiences. You’ll report to our creative director.

Success in this role requires an idea-first approach in which you ground your creative concepts in research and strategy. In addition, we’re looking for someone who will thrive as a member of a collaborative, casual, and collegial team in multiple locations.

Having a digital portfolio is essential to applying for this position — we won’t consider an application without one.

What You’ll Do

  • Design sophisticated, modern, beautiful mobile-first websites for colleges,universities, independent schools, and professional schools
  • Create new design systems and evolve existing ones
  • Plan visual designs and interactions through wireframes and specifications
  • Create mood boards
  • Participate in design sprints
  • Work with UX strategists, content strategists, and peer designers to create human-centered experiences
  • Prototype interactions and transitions
  • Closely collaborate with front-end developers to bring prototypes and visual designs to life
  • Work within client identity guidelines and contribute to the development of  identity elements as needed

Qualifications

  • B.A. in graphic design, interaction design, or interactive media preferred
  • An inspiring portfolio of design work that exceeds expectations
  • Extensive knowledge and love of typography, color, layout, photography, motion, and illustration for the web
  • Sketch and Marvel, or comparable modern design tools
  • Capacity to work on multiple projects concurrently
  • Basic understanding of HTML/CSS/JS
  • Three or more years of digital design experience
  • Experience in art direction for photography, video, and illustration a plus
