Business Development Manager

Salary range: $59,000 — 65,000

The business development manager, reporting to the director of marketing and client engagement, is involved in all aspects of mStoner’s sales efforts and initiatives. The manager plays a key role in developing and cultivating new business for mStoner, is responsible for ensuring a seamless transition from prospect to client, and for nurturing existing and ongoing client relationships.

An energetic, consultative selling style is essential. Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of mStoner’s core business and the challenges our clients face, and a desire to deeply understand our service offerings. We need a doer, someone who wants to grow with us, and can manage a process from beginning to end. Prior experience in an agency or in higher education admissions or marketing is a plus.

What You’ll Do: 

You’ll take a proactive, hands-on approach to managing client relationships at mStoner. Our process begins with identifying right-fit projects. You’ll conduct buyer research, interviewing past clients and gleaning insights to inform and improve our marketing content and service offerings. You’ll evaluate potential opportunities and assist in producing high-quality deliverables including, but not limited to, proposals. You’ll manage the client onboarding process, working collaboratively with the project team to nurture clients and identify follow-on opportunities. Specifically, your responsibilities will include:

  • In collaboration with the director of marketing and client engagement: 
    • Evaluate and screen incoming Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
    • Proactively identify sales opportunities with new and existing clients.
    • Own the end-to-end process of producing and delivering RFP responses.
    • Participate in the scoping, framing, and pricing of proposals for new and existing clients, with increasing levels of responsibility over time
    • Field direct inquiries about new projects from new and existing clients.
  • Conduct pre-presentation research to prepare the pitch team, prepare presentation decks, and participate in pitches.
  • Participate in discovery work for new client engagements in order to establish client relationships and build knowledge of our business. This will involve travel to client locations.
  • Manage ongoing relationships with potential and current clients through the business development cycle. 
    • Strategically identify new business opportunities from sales calls,
    • Make recommendations for marketing tactics based on sales knowledge and insights,
    • Monitor the needs of current clients and identify opportunities for us to add more value for them. Assist with positioning follow-on projects and producing quotes, proposals, change orders, or statements of work.
  • Track client information and manage documentation in HubSpot, the firm’s marketing and sales system.
  • Manage the client onboarding process, explaining immediate steps for new clients and collecting information and resources necessary to get off to a strong start on the project.
  • Create new client workspaces in our online project management software, Redbooth.
  • Gather background materials from client at the project’s inception.
  • In conjunction with the heads of client experience and project delivery, communicate regularly with clients in status meetings and through our cloud-based tools. 
    • Participate in recurring client status meetings with increasing responsibilities over time
    • Build trust with our clients and inspire their confidence in our team.
    • Listen actively for additional opportunities for engagement.
    • Identify risks and issues and ensure they are being addressed by our team.
    • Look for opportunities to nurture the client relationship through new ideas, sharing of our research and thought leadership, and other potential points of connection.
  • Bring client work requests to the team in a timely and organized manner.  Advocate for client priorities and deadlines in internal Agile sprint planning meetings.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of experience, preferably in account management, consulting, business development, or higher education
  • Ability to quickly win trust and build relationships
  • Solid research, writing, and editing skills with the desire to be excellent in these areas
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong verbal communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues from a variety of professional disciplines and at different levels of authority
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong sense of responsibility, prioritization, and the ability to meet deadlines
  • Capable of juggling multiple projects simultaneously
  • Customer service focused and highly collaborative; always willing to assist where needed
  • Strong relationship-building skills
  • Experience working with Mac OS, Pages and Keynote with the ability to produce high-quality deliverables
  • Experience working with HubSpot
  • Must be organized and able to manage and track time effectively
  • Must be versatile and able to contribute and add value to the team on a variety of tasks
  • Must be able to collaborate and work effectively in a remote / distributed environment on a full-time basis
  • Must be able to work in the Central Time Zone
  • Must be willing to travel on occasion to client locations, mStoner Chicago, or meetups with team members

Copywriter

As a copywriter at mStoner, you’ll use words to create compelling digital experiences. Join a team of talented, collaborative creatives bringing fresh ideas to higher ed websites and digital communications. Reporting to the Director of Content Strategy and Services, you’ll work closely with Strategy, Design, and Marketing to develop great content for our clients. You will craft clear, persuasive, engaging copy for a variety of audiences and channels, including web, email, and social. You’re a great fit for this role if you love storytelling and are passionate about digital content.

What You’ll Do

  • Research, write, and edit web copy for a variety of clients following brand guidelines and SEO best practices.
  • Edit client-produced copy for readability, brand alignment, and SEO.
  • Work closely with our Marketing team to execute digital marketing campaigns for clients. This includes writing emails, blog posts, marketing landing pages, digital ad copy, and organic social media posts.
  • Write and edit agency-focused content such as blog posts, white papers, and case studies for mstoner.com.

Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience working with content for digital products
  • 2+ years of experience as a copywriter, editor, content strategist, or similar role
  • Ability to work independently and in teams to identify and solve problems effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and perform well under pressure
  • Communicate in a clear, consistent, and transparent manner
  • Previous experience working in higher education communications, a plus
  • Experience with SEO strategy and keyword research, a plus
  • Experience using Google Analytics to track and measure content success, a plus
  • Possession of a relevant degree (English, creative writing, journalism, communications, integrated marketing, advertising, or similar)

Interactive Designer

mStoner is looking for an interactive designer with exceptional graphic design skills, a passion for typography, and an artistic eye for detail. Our ideal candidate has an interest in motion design and the talent to produce polished prototypes with the latest design tools. You’ll craft stunning, original creative concepts and create modern, responsive design systems for the web.

As an interactive designer, you’ll join an experienced team of strategists, UX designers, and technologists to bring education brands to life through elegant and immersive digital experiences. You’ll report to our creative director.

Success in this role requires an idea-first approach in which you ground your creative concepts in research and strategy. In addition, we’re looking for someone who will thrive as a member of a collaborative, casual, and collegial team in multiple locations.

Having a digital portfolio is essential to applying for this position — we won’t consider an application without one.

What You’ll Do

  • Design sophisticated, modern, beautiful mobile-first websites for colleges,universities, independent schools, and professional schools
  • Create new design systems and evolve existing ones
  • Plan visual designs and interactions through wireframes and specifications
  • Create mood boards
  • Participate in design sprints
  • Work with UX strategists, content strategists, and peer designers to create human-centered experiences
  • Prototype interactions and transitions
  • Closely collaborate with front-end developers to bring prototypes and visual designs to life
  • Work within client identity guidelines and contribute to the development of  identity elements as needed

Qualifications

  • B.A. in graphic design, interaction design, or interactive media preferred
  • An inspiring portfolio of design work that exceeds expectations
  • Extensive knowledge and love of typography, color, layout, photography, motion, and illustration for the web
  • Sketch and Marvel, or comparable modern design tools
  • Capacity to work on multiple projects concurrently
  • Basic understanding of HTML/CSS/JS
  • Three or more years of digital design experience
  • Experience in art direction for photography, video, and illustration a plus
