More Presidents Who Blog

Feb 27, 2006By Michael Stoner

Turns out that there are a number of other college presidents who are blogging-thanks to Roberta Sims from Bucknell University for turning us on to these blogs that we didn’t know about. These blogs are split between those that focus on concerns largely of interest to the campus communitylike Jim Richardson from Wenatchee Valley Collegeand ones that focus on more universal topics-like may of the posts by Patricia McGuire, president of Trinity University. It’s also interesting to see what institutions make of their president’s blog: Colorado College links to Dick Celeste’s blog from the home page [they should: Celeste writes appealing posts], but the blog by Jim Richardson, president of Wenatchee Valley College is hard to find.

Dick Celeste, president of Colorado College, has been blogging since November 2005. Celeste, a former governor and ambassador, writes personally, and his topics range from commentary about college issues to his reaction to warrantless wiretaps and a family Thanksgiving celebration. Celeste has a more blog-like, informal writing style than many other presidential bloggers.

Patricia McGuire, president of Trinity University in Washington, DC, writes longer-form blog posts—they read more like essays covering academic and world affairs. Trinity spotlights McGuire’s blog on its home page.

Jeff Zabudsky, president of Red River College in Winnipeg, writes a blog on the college’s Connect! RRC site?a community of wikis and blogs. Its home page clearly states that the purpose of the site is to “share and build knowledge, foster innovation, and to connect resources with college staff” and warns: “This site is not supported by Computer Services. As a public site, please note that it may be possible for non-college staff to see discussions or content.” Zabudsky’s blog entries tend to focus on community activities and concerns, such as the death of a long-time college employee and reflections about a successful alumni dinner.

The blog that Jim Richardson, the president of Wenatchee Valley College, writes is hosted on Blogspot. Started in August, 2005, Richardson writes about student athletes, the replacement of a major campus building, and shares thoughts on other topics relevant to the community.
